I think any competent bookkeeper could do it, if you aren't comfortable with the idea of doing it yourself. It's a time-consuming, but not particularly difficult task. If you start from an individual account register, only transactions in that account will be searched. If you start from the main accounts hierarchy page, all transactions will be searched. You can export your data into a csv format and import it into your spreadsheet. 1 Answer Sorted by: 5 From the Gnucash 2.6 Manual on 'Find': Exactly which transactions are searched depends on where you invoke the tool from. So consider creating a spreadsheet to collect and analyze data from previous years. Situations and reporting needs change, so even larger businesses may choose to create a work-around to collect and organize the needed data instead of opting for a programming solution. Even though I'm formerly a professional and had anticipated this kind of need, I've still had to make some adjustments, so you shouldn't feel bad about your situation. Also, I did a year end close process, which would make reclassing across different fiscal years more trouble than it is worth to me, lol. I just started using it about a year ago, so I don't have as much data as you probably do. Check the SPLITS table out and always do a backup copy of your GC file prior. Once done, you can issue a simple SQL queries that would transfer from 1 account to another (connect to the database via DBeaver for instance). I use GCP to track expenses over time as well. The fastest way: have your GnuCash saved in SQLIte format (much nicer experience vs XML). So, my 2 questions: 1) If so many people want the ability, why is this not a priority? 2) Is there an accounting reason that it can't or shouldn't be done? I kinda get not switching things around, but placing them where they SHOULD have been placed had I had the foresight to know I'd want to track it, seems like something that shouldn't take days or weeks to update. But I have one transaction type that is now over one thousand entries that I want to move out of "Imbalance-USD". You can then open up 'logical linkage account' to match up the amounts visually. In each of the above transactions, replace both 'BTransfer' and 'CTransfer' with 'logical linkage account'. Years ago I wrote a Python Script that's just, basically, an automated keyboard clicker so I can do this quicker than most. Create another asset account, which I'll name 'logical linkage account'. But the "best" way currently is to do a find on the transaction description and manually change EVERY SINGLE ENTRY to the new account. I have a monthly transaction that I have let stay in "Imbalance - USD" for years. I see a LOT of people want the ability, but thus far, no answer. I've searched and read about this in many locations.
